We received an email from Daria O'Neill just after it happened. Right after Daria and Gustav's show last Wednesday, The Powers That Be simply told them that it had been their last show. Starting October 20, the new morning show on KNRK will be hosted by Marconi, the retard who did the afternoon show. We emailed back and forth most of the day, and the message was clear: lots of booze would help her to mute the blow, but her feeling of being slapped hard by her employer would be there for a while.Needless to say, Kathy and I are not amused.
Marconi was the reason many people we know stopped listening to KNRK in the afternoon. It's strange, I've not run into anyone who likes him. Perhaps he's got a special semi-retarded high school male mentality that makes him edge out the irritating competition on KUFO. The problem? If his fans are out of school while he's on the air, he's going to sink himself fairly quickly during the mornings unless his fan base cuts morning Study Hall. Doesn't matter to us, as we won't be listening.
My deepest sympathy for Gustav and mid-day host Jayne who got the official axe by KNRK. You guys and Daria were certainly among the best DJ's in Portland. The story is that Entercom (KNRK's corporate owner) will retain Daria for another market. We haven't heard anything back from her since last Wednesday, but we hope things are looking beter than they were last week.
Ugh. Sorry, Daria. Mornings are simply not the same without you. In the event you run across this, a "mutual friend DJ" wants to contact you through a safe email. Drop us a note when you have a working email address.
